All he remembered were the screams...
She remembered everything else.
The day was normal - blue skies, sunshine, everyone going about their business, oblivious to any sense of impending doom. However, a sudden change in the wind that seemed to feel and smell wrong was the beginning. She remembered watching the sky change from blue to black almost instantly, and purple lightning illuminated the distant clouds.
Everyone froze, watching the sky anxiously, trying to understand what was going on.
Then the screaming began...
It was an endless wave of terrified shrieks as people were struck down by dark magic - some horribly mangled and burned alive, others becoming soulless slaves to the caster of the spells.
She grabbed his wrist and pulled him away from the crowd, dragging him under a large wheel barrow, where they were forced to watch the carnage as people were brutally killed by monstrous, possessed people and struck down by dark magic.

Elsewhere, in another part of the country, darkness was all she knew. She remembered watching her father control the skies, striking random towns with brutal lightning. "I'll let Kaiba know that I was serious, but he won't get away next time." she heard him say with a mad smile.
"Father?" she whispered. The man turned, facing her fully, mirroring the young girl in many ways such as appearance.
"Don't worry Aaralyn." he said approaching her and gathering her in his arms. "I'm creating a world that you and I will be able to live in together."
she was young, solely relying on her father for comfort and security. so she smiled at him and merely nestled into his chest.
the older man turned to face the window and watch the skies. He could sense the chaos that he was spreading, the panic and the terror, and even heard the screams. Making him smile in satisfaction.
==
Four years passed by. Despite the country's best efforts, darkness was growing and spreading fast. Many enlisted in the military in hopes to help drive off the dark forces, and most of the best mages were in battle.
A young girl was walking briskly through the castle, her brown hair tied back and her young green eyes wide with alert. she pushed through the heavy doors, to see only two people waiting for her in the room.
"mother, father, you summoned me?" she said quietly. The two looked up. her father was a very tall man with chocolate brown hair, the same shade as her own, his colbat eyes were ringed with dark circles and he was beginning to look weary from the effects of war. Her mothers green eyes reflected the same weariness, but she held herself tall, her blonde hair pulled back into a tight bun.
"Aelita darling." she said gently and came forward to hug her young daughter. "We just wanted to tell you, we will be involved in the invasion plans."
"What?" Aelita whispered in fear, the other plans had failed miserably. "y-you can't."
"I'm powerful enough, and it's my duty to lead them." her father said and reached forward to touch her daughters face.

Aelita allowed her father to stroke her, but she immediately grabbed his hand tightly afterwards. "B-But Father, Mother, you're needed here, too! Surely, you can send someone else in your place to lead!"
Her father sighed and said, "Aelita, I understand your concerns, but you must understand what needs to be done. No one knows our enemy better than we do."
"But father!"
"Relax dear," her mother said, approaching her. "Your father and I are well aware of the dangers we're facing and how our plans have gone so far. That's why we have some of our best healers joining us, including Yugi."
Aelita stared back at her mother curiously. "Wait, Kou's father is joining you?" While she didn't want to admit it out loud, this news did help calm her fears slightly. Kou's parents were some of the best known healers in the world. They were known to never abandon comrades and keep them alive under any circumstances. Was she truly being too overly paranoid? Still, she felt a horrible sensation gnawing at her mind.

"Yes," Kay said in answer to Aelita's question. "so we'll be absolutely fine. But, we need to be a part of this plan of attack. Your father thinks we should strike at the Dark Lord's castle and get it over with. Without him, the other dark forces cannot go on."
"I-I suppose that's true," Aelita said reluctantly, but that sensation still plagued her mind.
"We just wanted to tell you ourselves." Seto said and stood. "Go prepare for dinner, we'll be with you shortly."
the young girl nodded and left the room. Once she was gone, Seto sighed tiredly and leaned against his chair. "Seto?" Kay asked, wrapping her arms around his waist.
"I can't bring myself to leave her Kay." he said quietly. "she's next in line for the throne and is in so much danger from Bakura. I lie awake at night, fearful he would break in to steal my daughter. I know this all started because of me."
"Seto," Kay said sadly, "you can't keep tearing yourself apart for what happened all those years ago."
"I can't help it though. I took away the one thing that kept him in control, and now, this is my consequence." he gestured to the window. "War, darkness, destruction. My daughter is going to have to fix my mistakes."
"No, we're going to fix them. Together," Kay said firmly and gripped onto his two hands. "we're going to stop Bakura, and rebuild our country as a family."

Meanwhile, Aelita was walking towards her room, still feeling sick to her stomach from worry. Why couldn't her parents worry more about themselves?! She didn't know what she would do if she was left alone! Scowling, she entered her room and began grabbing some things; if her parents were leaving, she was going to insist on coming with them! She wouldn't let her parents be killed!
A sudden rapping at her window caused her to jump. Aelita was too sensitive to noises since the malevolent forces of Dark Lord took over the land. Quickly, she turned to the window, ready to pounce and attack whatever was out there. However, she was surprised to see her friend, Kou, hanging from one of the branches outside her window.
"Aelita! Let me in!"
He knocked at the window again, and Aelita sighed, strolling over and opening the window. "Kou, learn to go through the front door. You know what times we live in."
"I know, but I just wanted to talk to you," Kou said, crawling into her room. "Did your parents tell you their plans to invade the Dark Lord's castle?"
"Yes, they just finished telling me," she said with a sigh.
Kou gave a concerned frown and looked down. "I-I know my dad is going to help them, b-but I'm scared. I can't shake this feeling that something bad is going to happen..."
"Oh, you have that same feeling, too?" Aelita looked at her friend, now understanding why he was coming over to see her. Kou tended to get frightened easily, being younger than her and having to live under a dark cloud practically his whole life. Usually, his mother or father were there to calm his fears, but at moments like these, where he felt they were going through a lot themselves, he would find Aelita for a source of comfort. While they weren't related by blood, they were practically siblings in this apocalyptic world.

Kou nodded to Aelita's question. "yeah, I can't shake it. My father says that he won't be on the battle grounds, and he's skilled enough. But...I just can't help but think something will go terribly wrong."
Aelita hugged her younger friend. "Nothing will go wrong Kou." she whispered.

A few days passed, and the army was all set up. Seto was at the front with Kay, prepared to lead them out to Bakura's territory. Hoping to take the fight where innocent civilians wouldn't be hurt. "Father!" he turned and groaned slightly at seeing his young daughter riding up on her pony. "I'm coming with you!"
"Aelita, go back to the castle." he ordered.
"No!" she said stubbornly, Seto closed his eyes and then turned to Kay accusingly, as he always did when Aelita acted stubborn. Taking a moment to compose himself, he hopped off his horse and approached her.
"Aelita, I need you here. to watch over the kingdom for me whilst I am away." he said and put his hand over hers. "Can I count on you to do that?"
"Father I-" Aelita was at loss for words, she so desperately wanted to go with her parents, but her father trusting the kingdom with her in his absence also tugged at her mind. "Father, I want to help you though!"
"I know. That's why I want you to stay here, to help me run the kingdom."

Tears welled in her large green eyes and she shook her head. "But I want to be there to protect you!" she cried. Kay moved forward and knelt in front of Aelita, wiping her tears away tenderly.
"Aelita, my sweet girl," she said gently. "You are the next in line to be queen. With this war, with so much uncertainty, our people need a beacon of hope, as do your father and I. You are light in a world of darkness - you are the potential for a future. While I cannot say this journey won't be dangerous, your father and I will do all we can to stay alive and return to you and our people. But knowing you're here, knowing you are taking care of our kingdom if anything should happen to us, will give us the strength to fight. Do you understand?" Aelita sniffed but nodded.
"Yes mother..."
"That's my girl," she said gently, pulling her in for an embrace. "I love you, my darling."
"I love you too," she sobbed into her shoulder. Seto knelt down, embracing both girls. Kay kissed Aelita's forehead before climbing back on her horse and Seto did the same. Aelita sniffled and waved goodbye as they rode off with their army.

Seto turned to Kay and took hold of her hand. "She's going to be fine."
"I know, it's just hard to leave her behind." Kay whispered.
"I understand"
Elsewhere in the group, a girl in her mid twenties kept looking behind her, her crystal blue eyes watering ever so slightly.
"Kristen, Kou's going to be fine. Kaiba's letting him stay in the castle with Aelita." a boy with blonde bangs and spiky black and magenta hair said taking hold of her hand.
"I know Yugi." the girl sighed sadly, "I just hate leaving Kou behind."
"It's going to be hard, but we'll be back with him soon."

She sighed and nodded. "I truly hope so...this war just gives me a terrible feeling. More than any other battle we've fought."
"We've never faced such dark magic," Yugi admitted, "but I know we can conquer it." He reached over and took her hand. "together."
She smiled and squeezed his hand back with a nod. "Together. For now, and forever."

the journey continued, and finally, the army arrived to the edge of the country, looking into the most foreboding land. The entirety of it was covered by darkness, and a tall ominous tower stood as a beacon. Lightning struck in random areas around the tower.
"That must be where he's hiding." Seto said frowning at it. "We must proceed with caution."
"Indeed." Kay agreed. "shall we set up camp for the night?"
"I don't think it's night time my dear." he said. "the past few hours, it had grown darker and darker, it was a wonder if the dark sorcerer knew what time of day it was anymore.

"Still, it wouldn't hurt to set up camp and prepare," Kay said thoughtfully. "If we move too fast, we could be marching off to our deaths."
"Hm, that's a very good point..."

Seto stared out into the open field and sighed "Alright, let's go ahead and set up base. I'll meet with the military generals and we can draw out a plan."
"Very well." Kay agreed. They dismounted their horses, and Kaiba asked for the word to be spread to set up their tents but to be on guard.

Seto went to meet with the generals and kay assisted in setting up some of the tents. She wondered where yugi and kristen were and decided to go look for them after finishing a tent

She first found Yugi, providing a tonic to one of their soldiers. As Kay approached, he looked up and smiled at her. "Hello, Kay. Things seem to be going pretty well, huh?"
"Knock on wood, Yugi. You know saying things like that leads to trouble," Kay told him. "Have you seen Kristen anywhere?"
"Yeah, she should be over there, helping some of our other soldiers," Yugi said while pointing to another section of the camp. "We wanted to help some of our men relax and mentally prepare for our next move."

"That's good." Kay said nodding. "Thank you Yugi."
"It's my pleasure." Yugi smiled at her. Kay left him to go look for Kristen. After several minutes of looking, she found Kristen giving a soldier a tonic, the man seemed rather aggravated, but as he drank the tonic, he seemed to calm down significantly.
"Wow Kristen, the tonic you and Yugi have been developing seems to work wonders." Kay praised. Kristen looked up and smiled ever so slightly.
"Yeah, Yugi almost made me drink it when we...when we left the castle." she looked away sadly. "I'm just so worried for Kou."
"Our children are fine Kristen." Kay assured her gently, Kristen nodded and gave some instructions to the soldier, before she stood up.
"How has Aelita been?" She asked,
"Ok, until we left." Kay sighed, "she wanted to come so badly. But Seto and I don't want to risk it. She's showing more and more of her magical abilities by the day. There's no doubt in my mind that she's going to be strong. But,she's not ready to take on a foe like Ba-like the dark Lord."
Kristen nodded in understanding. the name they once referred the dark sorcerer to was long gone. She had a feeling that Kay was trying to distance herself from past feelings and regret. The name still hurt her to this day as well. "Do we know anything about...his daughter?" she asked hesitantly. Kay froze, before shaking her head.
"Knowing him, he probably just abandoned her." she said bitterly.
"Is that wishful thinking, or do you truly believe that?" Kristen frowned. "I knew him once you know. If only briefly, but I know that he wouldn't cast aside the one thing that would remind him of...of..."
"No, don't." Kay interrupted. "I hope for the childs sake that she was given off to someone who would love and cherish her,"

"One can only hope..." Kristen mumbled with a sigh. "Or perhaps she might have avoided this bleak future and was killed by one of those people possessed at the beginning of this dark age..."

"That's a bit dark." Kay said, but she tried not to think about it. This man wasn't fit to be a father.
"I think I should finish with the rest of the soldiers." Kristen said after an awkward pause.
"Alright, good luck."
"Thank you."
==
Night began to come, or they all assumed so, as the land got darker as the hours passed. Kay and Seto had settled together in their tent, prepared for a fitful night of sleep. They had met with the military generals and constructed a plan, deciding to wait and let the army rest up before striking. "Are you nervous?" Kay asked,
"Not at all. I'm just ready to end this." Seto said putting his arms around her. "I want things to go back to normal."
"Me too."she whispered, snuggling into him.
--
Across camp, Kristen and Yugi were settling in together. "I'm a little nervous that they've decided to wait." Yugi said. "The dark sorcerer must know we're here. And his powers are better fueled at night."
"I trust Kaiba." Kristen said "I'm sure he's put that into consideration."

"R-Right..." Hoping to ease both of their worries, Yugi came closer to Kristen and brought her closer to him. "Well, no matter what, I promise to keep you safe, Kristen. Kou needs you."
Kristen sighed and grabbed onto Yugi's hand. "He needs us both, Yugi. And I'll make sure you make it through this, too. And Kay. And Kaiba. We'll all be okay."
Yugi smiled as the two of them curled into each other, feeling a brief moment of calm in their embrace. They spent a long time like that, giving soft kisses on occasion. What broke them apart was a faint sound of movement outside of their tent. Kristen gasped. "Yugi, did you hear that?"
"Yeah, I did."
"That wouldn't be the wildlife, would it?"
"Hm, I don't think so..." Yugi frowned and stood up. "I think we should get Kay and Kaiba. The dark sorcerer may be planning an ambush."

"Right."
"You go get them,I'm going to see if I can detect what it is." Yugi said.
"Yugi!"
"Please Kristen, there isn't much time."
Kristen hesitated for a long moment, before she hugged him "Please be careful Yugi,."
"I will." the two parted and Kristen ran towards Kay and Kaiba's tent. Whilst Yugi abandoned his tent to locate the source of the noise.
he wandered camp for a bit, until he heard a high pitched screaming coming from the forest. "YUGI!"
"Kristen?!" Yugi gasped before he ran towards it without thinking. "Kristen where are you?"
he crashed through a bush, only to come across a tall figure clad in black robes. His white hair glistening in the moonlight practically, his red eyes glowed at the sight of Yugi and he smirked darkly. "I knew that would get you." he said cruelly,
"You!" Yugi gasped, "W-what did you do with Kristen?!"
"You really don't want to know." the man said before swiping his arm, and the next thing Yugi knew, he was hit by a wave of exhaustion and he fell to the ground. The robed man bent down and picked him up before walking away.
-=-
"Kay!" Kristen called through the tent. "Kay please wake up."

Kay and Seto stirred inside their tent, and Seto mumbled, "What is she doing up at this hour? Sleeping is already hard enough as it is."
Kay didn't respond to him and instead opened the tent flap. At seeing Kristen's look of alarm, she woke up a little more. "Kristen? What is it?"
"Yugi and I heard a strange noise. We think the dark sorcerer could be making his move," Kristen told her urgently.
